ALEX BRUCE scored 171 goals for Preston North End, but none were more important than the one that clinched promotion back to the Second Division.
Bruce fired home 27 goals to win the Golden Boot with the last of them coming in dramatic fashion in their final game against Shrewsbury Town at Deepdale.
Nobby Stiles’ side needed a win to be assured of going up in third place behind champions Wrexham and runners-up Cambridge United.
