JOHN Gayle was a lucky charm for Brian Laws’ bid to get Scunthorpe United out of Division Three as he made it a hat-trick of successive play-off final appearances.

Gayle scored twice for Birmingham in their 1991 Associate Members’ Cup final win over Tranmere at the Twin Towers before losing in his first play-off final.
He then went on to help Northampton beat Swansea in the 1997 Division Three play-off final before returning a season later for the defeat at the hands of Grimsby.
