Back in December, nobody at Wrexham could have imagined Sam Smith leading the Red Dragons’ charge for the Premier League.

Signed from Reading for a club-record £2m fee last January, the striker endeared himself to supporters by scoring seven goals during the run-in, including a famous brace in the promotion-clinching victory against Charlton.
Yet by the time Christmas Day rolled around, the 27-year-old had mustered just one Championship start, scored a solitary goal and was effectively fourth-choice striker behind Kieffer Moore, Nathan Broad-head and Josh Windass.
