Richie Wellens, who managed Jerry Yates at Swindon, once said that the Blackpool forward is “good at everything”.
At times, that has seemed less a blessing and more a curse. So versatile and tactically astute is the 25-yearold forward that personal glory is routinely sacrificed for the greater good.
Yates scored 23 goals as the Seasiders won promotion from League One in 2020-21, a tally that showcased both predatory instincts and an eye for the spectacular. Several Championship clubs, not least Nottingham Forest, made enquiries.
