Ex-Pompey midfielder Carl Baker joins Indian side Atlético de Kolkata

The 34-year-old makes the move to Teddy Sheringham’s Indian Super League side.

Former Southport and midfielder Carl Baker has today joined Indian Super League side Atlético de Kolkata, after his departure from on deadline day.

The 34-year-old left the South Coast club by mutual consent and reportedly had an offer to return to the Ricoh Arena. But he’s decided on a more adventurous option, linking up with manager Teddy Sheringham at the Salt Lake Stadium.

“Looking forward to a new challenge. Thanks for all your support,” Baker wrote on Twitter.

He will join fellow ex-Coventry player Conor Thomas and veteran Irish striker Robbie Keane at the club, with Kolkata hoping to retain their Super League crown after a victorious campaign last time out.

Baker first broke onto the scene with Southport in 2003, going on to make 80 appearances and score 18 goals for the club before he was snapped up by in 2007. A season with the Shrimps followed before a move to Stockport.

He then spent a productive five season spell with Coventry between 2009 and 2014, grabbing 28 goals in 182 appearances. Two years at followed, before a title-winning campaign with last year.

He will now take his considerable experience to ‘The Bengal Tigers’.
