Derbyshire departs Rotherham for Cyprus

Matt Derbyshire has turned down a new contract offer from to sign for Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia.

The 30-year-old played a key part in the successful bid for survival, scoring in wins against and which would prove a catalyst in helping the club embark on a 11-match unbeaten run to end the season strongly.

The former striker found the back of the net 17 times in 69 appearances for the Reds, but has opted to join Omonia who finished 3rd in the Cyprus First Division this season.

A club statement posted on United's website, read: “Following a meeting between the manager and Matt Derbyshire, Matt has decided that he wishes to take up an opportunity to join A C Omonia Nicosia in Cyrpus.

“The club would like to place on record our thanks to Matt for his major contribution over the past two seasons where he has been a key player in our Championship campaigns.”

Derbyshire was one of three out-of-contract players offered deals to extend their stay at New York Stadium, with the futures of defenders Kirk Broadfoot and Stephen Kelly set to be confirmed within days.

New boss said earlier in the week, “It's fair to stay I would like all three to remain at the club.”
