Coventry agree new deal to stay at Ricoh Arena

Coventry City have agreed a new deal to stay at the Ricoh Arena until at least the end of May 2018.

The agreement adds some light to the Sky Blues‘ immediate future as the board have previously signalled their intentions to build a new stadium.

But Coventry‘s vice Chairman Chris Anderson said he was, “Pleased to reach an agreement to stay at the Arena for the foreseeable future.

“I have already said on several occasions that it is important for us to have security about where we are going to play football next year,” Anderson added.

Since leaving Highfield Road, Coventry’s home of 106 years, in 2005 the club has since came into controversy. Firstly, with unpaid rent demanded by the Ricoh’s owners – Arena Coventry Limited (ACL) – which led the club to play their home games at Northampton Town’s Sixfields Stadium.

And, secondly, a dispute with Coventry Council over a £14.4m loan handed to ACL. Which SISU allege to be an unlawful ‘state aid’ payment.

The deal continues the ground share between League One‘s 4th-placed side and Rugby Union big guns Wasps, who bought out the 32,600-seater stadium last year.

Wasps chief executive David Armstrong expressed his content at continuing the ground share: “We have always said we are keen to work alongside the football club and for the Sky Blues to stay at the Ricoh Arena, which continues to be their home as well as Wasps’ home.”
