Winner Tel made football magical

As a nine-year-old I was captivated by his Tottenham team. My primary school friends supported Newcastle but, for me, it was all about Lineker, Gazza, Holsten and Hummel.
To this day, I can still see Paul Gascoigne’s free-kick rocketing beyond David Seaman in the FA Cup semi-final, seemingly picking up speed as it slammed into the top corner.
Later, of course, there was Euro ’96. It’s difficult to explain to anyone who wasn’t a teenager back then but the euphoria generated by England’s run to the semi-finals has - for me never been surpassed.
