Ismaila Sarr must have dreamed of starring for Senegal against England, and perhaps reminding his many Premier League suitors what they are missing.
It didn’t happen; the Watford winger threatened only fitfully when Senegal were on top and then vanished completely after Gareth Southgate’s side seized control to book their place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
As a metaphor for the many false starts in his young career it is apt, and the hope for the Hornets is that Sarr returns to Vicarage Road with a point to prove.
