VAR was introduced to eliminate human error. But because the system is administered by humans, an element of subjectivity is inevitable.
With fouls, judgement calls are necessary. No algorithm yet in existence could be coded to understand the subtleties of simulation.
But offsides are a binary decision, or at least should be. Off, or on. Why do we need humans for that? That is why the test of semi- automated offsides currently underway in the FIFA Arab Cup is highly encouraging.
