Chris Wilder thought he knew what to expect when he returned to Sheffield United in September.

After all, he’d only been gone three months. Beaten in last season’s play-off final by Sunderland, the 58-year-old subsequently stepped down after being informed by the club’s American owners that recruitment would be led by an AI consultancy.
Yet so quickly had the situation unravelled under his short-lived replacement Ruben Selles that the team Wilder inherited no longer bore any resemblance to the dogged battlers who’d finished third the previous year.
