Bristol City players are to repay fans who travelled to Preston on Tuesday night and saw their team get thrashed 5-0 by Simon Grayson’s side.

The Robins, who have won just four of their last 29 games, had hoped to have turned a corner after beating promotion chasing Huddersfield 4-0 at Ashton Gate on March 17, but have since lost twice after the international break and are now just one point clear of the relegation zone.

The mauling at Deepdale was the heaviest defeat Lee Johnson’s men have suffered this season, and as a result, the players and staff think it’s only fair to reimburse the 312 faithful fans who made the 386-mile round trip.

Speaking after the game on Tuesday night, Johnson was understandably frustrated, telling Radio Bristol: “It’s devastating, frustrating and I’m angry.

“The first half we’ve played some excellent football, I felt we were the better side, and were unlucky to come in 1-0 down.

“But in those moments we need to be tougher. Whether it be balls into the box, finishing, 50-50 tackles. In that 20 minute spell in the second-half we capitulated. We’ve got to be tougher.

“Nobody can say they’ve had a good game but it’s frustrating because we really weren’t that bad in the first half. In my opinion it wasn’t a 5-0 game but we got beaten 5-0 and there are three or four really poor defensive errors that cost us.”
