Sheffield Wednesday wait on Westwood injury

Sheffield boss is waiting for an injury update on first choice goalkeeper Keiren Westwood before selecting his team for the visit to .

Westwood, 32, is one of the best ‘keepers in the second tier, but has suffered from niggling injuries in the past few weeks that have seen him substituted at half-time against at the start of the month, and again against eight days ago, due to a  back injury.

The nature of the injury also kept him out of last week’s hard fought victory against , and the former man is being closely monitored by the medical team at Hillsborough ahead of the trip to the iPro.

Carvalhal told Wednesday’s official website: “Westwood has had a scan, it is clear, it hasn’t shown anything,

“But he still has a little pain so we are monitoring him day by day. We hope he can recover.

“We need all our players and of course Keiren is an important players in our team. I think he is very near and probably he will play on Saturday but we will see and check him between now and the day of the game.”

However, despite the Portuguese boss clearly keen to get Westwood back between the sticks, Carvalhal was quick to praise academy product Cameron Dawson, who has proved to be an able replacement in goal and did well to keep a clean sheet last week.

“Cammy is a very, very good young goalkeeper”, added Carvalhal. “He has done well and we are pleased with the goalkeepers we have at the club.

“Whoever plays, I have no problem sleeping the night before any game.”
