Argyle sign Donaldson from Cambridge

have made their first dip into the summer transfer window by signing midfielder Ryan Donaldson from United on a free.

The 25-year-old was told he could leave The Abbey as the season drew to a close and now joins a side looking to bounce back from play-off final heartache.

Donaldson, who can play in central midfield or on the left wing, came through the ranks at where he was made captain of the reserves side at 18, before moving to Cambridge in 2013.

In United’s amber colours, Donaldson would provide a boost to their hopes of returning to the by scoring from a free-kick in the National League Play-off final.

The Geordie also gives a boost to Derek Adams who will be disappointed on missing out on striker Jamille Matt, who decided to join relegated instead of making his loan move with the Pilgrims permanent.

Striking additions at Plymouth are paramount with Reuben Reid’s future looking uncertain, despite Argyle playing down talk of an exit.
