Lincoln City are on the verge of achieving one of the most historic seasons in the club’s history as they seek a return to the second tier of football for the first time since the 1961/62 season.

Their red-hot form, combined with the recent faltering of their closest rivals, Cardiff City, has put Michael Skubala’s side firmly in the driving seat for the League One title.

Winning 25 of their last 30 matches, including a 3-0 home victory over Rotherham United, Lincoln have demonstrated a rare blend of consistency, attacking flair, and defensive solidity that has made them so hard to play against this season

The Imps completed all of their business in the first half against Rotherham. A Ted Cann own goal opened the scoring after 18 minutes, Ben House doubled the advantage, and Reeco Hackett finished the scoring just before half-time.

This victory extended Lincoln’s unbeaten run to 22 matches, a club record, and widened their gap to 18 points over third place, highlighting their dominance as the season approaches its climax.

Here, Holly Wright breaks down the key stats behind their campaign and why they are on the verge of promotion to the Championship.

The Bluebirds’ recent challenges

While Cardiff have enjoyed a strong season – winning 23 of 38, with seven draws and eight defeats –they’ve shown signs of vulnerability in recent weeks.

Despite scoring 73 goals at an average of 1.92 per game, the Bluebirds have faltered, including a goalless draw against Blackpool last weekend.

They have only won two of their last six games, which included a disappointing 2-0 defeat to their closest title challengers.

These stumbles have been pivotal in shaping the League One title race. Lincoln have capitalised on Cardiff’s dip in form, maintaining momentum, and strengthening their position at the top.

While Cardiff remains a strong side, Lincoln’s consistency has made them the clear favourites for the League One crown.

Defensive backbone

A major factor in Lincoln’s rise is their rock-solid defence.

George Wickens, just 24 years old, has been a fortress in goal with 16 clean sheets and only 34 goals conceded in 39 games, improving on the 11 clean sheets he kept last season.

Tendayi Darikwa, the captain, combines experience with energy, often leading from the front, covering ground to support both defence and attack.

Sonny Bradley has been a commanding presence at centre-back, contributing four goals and two assists, while mentoring Tom Hamer, who has three goals and five assists and adds an attacking threat with his long throws.

Adam Reach provides stability at left-back, with four goals and five assists, though a recent injury opens the door for Ryley Towler or Josh Honohan.

A midfield engine and a young star

Lincoln’s midfield has been essential in controlling games and disrupting opposition attacks this season.

Conor McGrandles consistently protects the backline and recovers possession.

Meanwhile, Ivan Varfolomeev, a young Ukrainian midfielder, orchestrates play with precise passing, registering 89% in his own half and 75% overall, allowing Lincoln to transition quickly from defence to attack.

His recent call-up to the Ukraine U21s underscores how crucial he has become to the squad.

The attackers driving the Imps forward

Lincoln’s attack has been a key factor in their dominant season, with several players contributing goals, creativity, and work rate.

Hackett leads the line with ten goals and six assists, linking midfield to attack and providing a cutting edge in the final third.

Jack Moylan, the team’s unpredictable ‘live wire,’ has nine goals this season and is renowned for his tireless work rate, often tracking back to win possession and make up for earlier mistakes.

House has returned from injury to contribute six goals and two assists, offering consistent effort and a physical presence in the final third.

Rob Street has also been vital, scoring ten goals while demonstrating versatility by playing both as a winger and a forward, adapting seamlessly to cover for injuries or tactical changes.

Together, this attacking group combines creativity, finishing ability, and relentless energy, making Lincoln a constant threat to opposition defences and a team capable of capitalising on any slip-ups by their rivals.

The road to the League One title

Lincoln are in a strong position to seal the title after the international break.

A win over AFC Wimbledon at the LNER Stadium on Good Friday, April 3, could spark home celebrations – if results elsewhere go their way.

If not, they’ll have another chance on Easter Monday, April 6, when they travel to Reading’s Select Car Leasing Stadium.

A point or better in that match would mathematically confirm promotion and the League One title, assuming Lincoln maintain their 18-point cushion over third place.

These two fixtures are now the key title-deciding games, and given Lincoln’s form, squad depth, and consistency, early April could very well be the moment the Imps lift the trophy and celebrate promotion to the Championship.

Promotion to the Championship is no longer just a dream, it is a near-certainty, with the club on the cusp of celebrating one of the most remarkable seasons in its history.
