Paul Dickov: Frank Lampard’s Coventry City are exceeding all expectations at the top of Championship

Former Arsenal, Leicester City and Scotland striker Paul Dickov believes Coventry City and their manager Frank Lampard have surprised almost all Championship fans this season.

Coventry top the table, having only lost once in 15 games, scoring 40 goals in the process and currently sit five points clear of Middlesbrough in second place.

The Sky Blues have been the Championship’s main entertainers and look to build their automatic promotion push following their play-off semi-final defeat last campaign.

Dickov is delighted for the manager and club, but has admitted they have taken him aback with their start to the campaign, in an exclusive interview with Best Betting Bonuses.

When asked if Lampard had learnt from his previous managerial mistakes, the former international said: “I think he’d done a great job at Derby.

“I think at Chelsea and at Everton, he was a little hard done by. They both had well-documented problems off the pitch at the time.

“To see him doing what he’s doing with Coventry – last season, nobody would have expected him to be anywhere near the top.

“A lot of people in the summer thought that Coventry might have, after getting to the playoffs, had a bit of a lull and dropped off a little bit.

“They were nobody’s favourites to get anywhere near the playoffs last year. Not even this year, I wouldn’t have thought so”

Dickov added: “I’m delighted for Frank because he’s a fantastic guy, but he’s also a fantastic coach, which gets spoken about less.

“To see the way the team is playing with not many big-name players, you might not know them all. That’s not disrespectful, but there are teams with more familiar names.

“But he’s got his group of players playing some wonderful football and scoring lots of goals.

“So yeah, I’m really pleased for him.”
