Now that the end of season run-in is underway, the EFL is conjuring up some unbelievable results.
Sheffield United fell to bottom side Plymouth Argyle and further away from the top two in the Championship, while Wrexham held onto their League One automatic promotion spot despite a goalless draw at Wigan Athletic.
League Two was a whole different ball game, as Bradford City dropped down to second with a 5-4 loss against Swindon Town, in which they were 4-3 up after 89 minutes.
Somehow that wasn’t the best comeback of the weekend.
Near the bottom of the table, Tranmere Rovers and Accrington Stanley both needed a result to maintain a gap with the relegation zone.
Rovers were 3-0 down after 78 minutes, before three unbelievable goals from outside the box saw them draw level after 90+11 minutes, with the limbs for the third being some of the best ever seen.
Here is Charlie Elliott’s Team of the Week from an absolutely bonkers weekend.
Lawrence Vigouroux (Swansea City)
Neither team had much at stake in this encounter, with Swansea City all but safe from relegation and aiming for a top-half finish, while Sunderland had secured a play-off spot.
Nonetheless, the Swans saw this match as a significant victory.
Ben Cabango’s 58th-minute finish was the only goal of the game as the Welsh team won 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.
Chilean goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux put in a great shift and was assured across the whole game, not letting anything past him.
While he wasn’t tested a huge amount, he dealt with everything necessary.
Since coming back from the World Cup qualification games with Chile, he has been outstanding, and his international quality was shown yet again.
Three clean sheets in a row is no mean feat, but he has done exactly that.
Bradley Halliday (Bradford City)
Bradford may have lost 5-4 to Swindon in an absolute classic in League Two, but right back Bradley Halliday got two assists as well as a goal, so he warrants a place in this team.
His brace of assists came in the first half and were both for Calum Kavanagh, two excellent long throw-ins putting it on a plate for his striker to finish.
At the time, this put his team 3-1 up and seemingly in the driving seat.
After 77 minutes, he then put Bradford 4-3 up with a composed finish into an open net.
Not his best day defensively but three goal involvements from right back can’t be overlooked.
Terrell Thomas (Carlisle United)
Not only did he absolutely pocket Morecambe striker Lee Angol, but Terrell Thomas even bagged a goal in Carlisle United’s 2-0 win at the Mazuma Stadium, which takes them within six points of safety and off the foot of the League Two table.
Aerially dominant and composed on the ball, his second-half strike capped off an outstanding performance.
Thomas latched onto a floating ball, took a touch, and finished in a manner that even the most prolific strikers would be proud of.
Eoghan O’Connell (Wrexham AFC)
In much less memorable fashion to some of the other games from this weekend, Wrexham stayed in the automatic promotion spots thanks to a 0-0 draw against Wigan.
Eoghan O’Connell was the main man in this dull affair, as he kept the Tics’ attack very quiet with some great defensive work.
Plenty of balls won and a good aerial presence; the Irishman’s efforts could prove crucial come the end of the season.
Should his side have lost, they would have dropped out of the autos, so the plaudits have to go to the 29-year-old.
Josh Earl (Barnsley)
Barnsley got their revenge on Bolton Wanderers, who beat them in last year’s League One play-off semi-final, by doing the double over them this season.
The Tykes ran out 4-1 victors at Oakwell in a very comprehensive victory, with centre-back Josh Earl getting a brace of assists.
Also adept as a left-back, he has found his home on the left side of a back three and looks comfortable playing at the Yorkshire side.
Neither assist was particularly spectacular, but they all count.
Omari Patrick (Tranmere Rovers)
In some of the best limbs ever seen in the EFL, Omari Patrick bagged the crucial equaliser, which saw Tranmere come from 3-0 down after 78 minutes to draw 3-3 away to Accrington.
The draw effectively leaves Rovers safe, with their maverick winger starting and finishing the comeback with the first and third goals.
A beautiful free kick from outside the box gave his team hope, but few would have genuinely expected the scenes that followed.
With the score at 3-2 and with 101 minutes on the clock, Patrick curled an effort into the top right corner to send the away fans into absolute bedlam.
Ryan Croasdale (Port Vale)
Port Vale stormed to the top of League Two with a comprehensive 5-0 victory over mid-table Bromley.
Midfielder Ryan Croasdale ran the show and was superb across the entire afternoon, with a goal and an assist.
A promotion winner from the league last season with Stockport County, his experience is proving valuable for the Valiants.
Vale took a 2-0 lead following his perfectly weighted cross, which striker Lorent Tolaj latched on to.
Then later on, a poked finish rounded off the scoring and finished off a five-star performance.
Tom Bayliss (Lincoln City)
Lincoln City drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury Town in a very disappointing match, as midfielder Tom Bayliss spearheaded a very average Imps side.
His driving run forward and beautifully curled finish started the afternoon off well for his side, with them taking the lead after only four minutes, but they struggled from thereafter.
Against his former side, however, Bayliss put in a defensively solid shift for the rest of the game, with the most tackles across the 90 minutes and four interceptions.
While he didn’t have much joy offensively after the four-minute mark, it can still be considered a well-rounded performance, given the fact that he scored a goal.
Harry Smith (Swindon Town)
Unsurprisingly, there are a couple of attackers in this team from Swindon’s 5-4 win over Bradford, with Town striker Harry Smith netting a brace in one of the strangest games in recent memory.
The big man grabbed two equalisers, to make it 3-3 and 4-4, which set his team up nicely for their grandstand finish.
His height was too much for the Bantams to handle, as he rose highest in the box to expertly flick a cross into the far corner for the eighth goal of the match.
Overall, Smith was instrumental in the comeback win and deserves all of his plaudits.
Lorent Tolaj (Port Vale)
Another Vale player who shone in their huge victory was Tolaj.
The Swiss magician has been unstoppable as of late.
Two goals and an assist is almost as good as it gets for a striker and add to that the overall quality he brings, and you can see why he is so highly rated.
Both his strikes came from close range, while his assist was a simple pass for youngster Jack Shorrock to score from.
He was the most fouled player on the pitch and created the most chances, which caps off an impressive haul from the former Brighton & Hove Albion man.
Calum Kavanagh (Bradford City)
In one of the rarest cases in football, Kavanagh scored a hat trick but was on the losing side as City fell to a 5-4 away defeat at the County Ground.
The Irish striker scored three in the first half to put the Bantams 3-1 up before they were pegged back and eventually defeated.
All of his goals came around the six-yard box, with three poached finishes putting Bradford in the driving seat early on.
A proper performance from the striker that deserves credit despite the result.
