Four Championship Players That Will Be Playing at The World Cup

For the first time in domestic football history, the English season will pause in November for the 2022 World Cup. The competition looks set to be one of the most exciting in recent editions, with France, England and Brazil leading the betting to win the competition.

However, the lack of options at Gareth Southgate’s disposal in the defensive areas of the pitch has led to many questioning whether they should bet on the Three Lions after taking advantage of 2022 World Cup betting offers. But, it isn’t just Premier League players that will be representing their nations in Qatar, as a number of the best players in the Championship will also be heading to the World Cup.

Ismaila Sarr

It looks to be a huge tournament in Qatar for Senegal, as they are among the favourites to progress out of their group. One of their key players during the World Cup looks set to be Watford star Ismaila Sarr.

The 24-year-old was widely expected to leave the Hornets during the summer, but no bid met his valuation. He has quickly settled to life back in the Championship, as the winger has scored three goals in seven games. Sarr has also played seven times for Senegal this year, scoring on one occasion.

Junior Hoilett

It will be a massive World Cup for Canada, as they compete at the prestigious event for just the second time in their history. Junior Hoilett has been a regular for his national side since making his debut in 2015. The winger was part of the Canadian squad that competed at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the tournaments in 2017, 2019 and 2021.

The 32-year-old was one of the hottest properties in English football after his Premier League breakthrough with Blackburn Rovers, and it is a credit that he is still playing in the top two leagues to this day. Nowadays, he is playing for Reading, where he has made 39 appearances and scored four goals since joining the club in 2021. 

Tim Krul

Tim Krul has been a part of the Netherlands set up since making his international debut in 2011. Dutch fans most fondly remember him after being sent on in the World Cup 2014 quarterfinals against Costa Rica. Louis van Gaal sent on the goalkeeper with minutes remaining of extra time, and he was ultimately the hero, as he saved two of the five spot kicks.

History could repeat itself in Qatar this year, as van Gaal was reappointed the head coach of the national side. So far this season, he has been a regular in the Norwich goal, making 12 Championship appearances.

Josh Sargent

There are a growing number of American players in the English divisions, and many of them will be representing the USA at the World Cup later this year. One star that looks set to be named in the U.S. squad looks set to be Norwich City’s Josh Sargent.

The 22-year-old joined the Canaries from Werder Bremen in 2021, but was part of the team that was relegated last term. However, he has been in excellent form across the early months of the new season, as he has scored six Championship goals in 12 appearances so far this season.
