Charlton appoint Jose Riga as Head Coach

Charlton Athletic have moved swiftly to replace Karel Fraeye by reappointing Jose Riga as Head Coach.

Riga had a brief stint in charge of the Addicks at the end of the 2012/13 season and has since been in charge of Standard Liege, Blackpool and Metz.

The appointment represents the fourth time that Charlton owner Roland Duchatelet has hired Riga as Head Coach of one of his clubs.

Charlton have had a difficult start to the season and are currently sitting in 23rd place in the Championship, three points adrift from safety.

The South London club began the season with Guy Luzon in charge but the Israeli was sacked at the end of October . Luzon was then replaced with Fraeye who was relieved of his duties yesterday evening after only winning two of his 12 games in charge.

In a statement on Charlton’s official club website Duchâtelet said, “This has been a disappointing season for everyone connected with Charlton and the board take responsibility for that.

“Some things, like an unprecedented number of injuries, we could not have foreseen. But we have also made errors in recruitment, mistakes we have immediately tried to address in January.”

Riga’s first game back in charge of the Addicks is a difficult trip to promotion chasing Hull on Saturday.
