Doncaster Rovers appoint Darren Ferguson

Doncaster Rovers have appointed former Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson as their new first-team boss.

Ferguson succeeds fellow scot Paul Dickov in taking over at the Keepmoat Stadium, having been out of the game since being sacked by Posh in February this year.

The 43 year-old guided Peterborough to the Championship with back-to-back promotions between 2007 and 2009, and joins with a career win ratio of 42%.

Doncaster, who sit one place above the drop zone in 20th, held a press conference on Friday morning where Ferguson stated his enthusiasm to take the South Yorkshire club forward.

“I’m absolutely raring to go,” said the former Preston North End manager, ““I had a good break and I think I needed it but the timing of this job is perfect.”

“Have I got the tools to work with? Absolutely. That is clear.

“I believe in the group of players that are here. Promotion is and has always been the aim.”

While Ferguson made no bones about his desire to instill an attractive brand of football at the League One side:

“I play a way of football that is attractive for the fans, that’s very important to them and that’s what I expect of my team,” said Ferguson.

“Fans want to be entertained.

Ferguson takes charge of his first match in Saturday’s encounter with Bradford City, and he concluded by saying, “I’m going to give my absolute all to this club and the supporters.”

In lieu of Dickov’s departure in September, Rob Jones had been made caretaker manager for Donny but could only lead the team to one win in five. After discussions with Ferguson on Thursday, Jones will remain in his coaching role with the club’s under 21s.
