When Ben Watson’s number went up in the 80th minute of Charlton Athletic’s 2-2 draw with Hartlepool United in January, nobody realised he’d never set foot on a pitch again.
Nobody, that is, except Watson. A 17-year-old debutant for Crystal Palace in 2003, the midfielder played for Wigan Athletic, Watford and Nottingham Forest, famously scoring the Latics’ winning goal against Manchester City in the 2013 FA Cup final.
