Title favourites Norwich City were given a rude awakening on their return to the Championship as Steve Morison’s Cardiff grabbed a 1-0 victory.

Midfielder Romaine Sawyers cracked home a deflected winner from outside the area on 49 minutes in a game which saw both sides finish with ten men.

Deflated Canaries boss Dean Smith admitted: “Our final ball in the final third wasn’t as good as it should have been and we lacked that quality which probably cost us the game.”

His delighted Cardiff counterpart Steve Morison said: “To a man we were excellent.”

Stockport’s return to the EFL after an 11-year absence ended in disappointment as they were beaten 3-2 at home by Barrow.
