Byrne’s season is over after scans revealed he tore an anterior cruciate ligament in Gillingham’s win over Sunderland.
Manager Steve Evans said of the 31-year-old midfielder: “I’m gutted for him. He was down when I spoke to him, but hopefully our chat lifted him a little bit.
“I think his operation is scheduled for early next week and he will then have to rest for two or three weeks over the Christmas period and then he’ll come in and set about four or five months to get fit.
