League One roundup: Stockport fail to cement play-off place while Peterborough confirm safety

Three fixtures took place in League One on Tuesday night with still plenty on the line with regards to the play-off race and the final relegation spot.

Three fixtures took place in League One on Tuesday night with still plenty on the line with regards to the play-off race and the final relegation spot.

Peterborough knew a point at home to Mansfield Town would be enough to secure their place in the division for next season and despite missing numerous chances, a 0-0 scoreline got them over the line.

In the play-off race, Stockport County failed to secure their spot in the top six as they fell to a 2-1 home defeat to already relegated Port Vale.

Elsewhere Barnsley took home all three points at Northampton Town to stretch the Cobblers’ winless run to 10 games.

Peterborough United 0-0 Mansfield Town

The Posh’s greater need for a result saw them have the majority of the chances and although they could not end a seven-game winless run, one point was enough to ensure fourth-from-bottom Exeter can no longer overtake them.

Peterborough’s Kyrell Lisbie had the game’s first big chance when he was put in behind by Jacob Mendy’s long ball, but Mansfield goalkeeper Liam Roberts came out to smother his attempt.

Into the second half, a good ball by Archie Collins created a chance for David Kamara whose shot was beaten away by Roberts at his near post.

From the resulting corner, Roberts flapped at Collins’ cross and was relieved to see Posh defender David Okagbue lift his shot over from close range.

Roberts thwarted the hosts again when he kept out Lisbie’s volley before Rhys Oates gave them a scare in stoppage time when he bent a shot wide from just outside the area.

Northampton Town 0-1 Barnsley

Northampton Town set a new club record of 10 straight league defeats with a narrow loss to mid-table Barnsley at Sixfields.

Already relegated and set to finish bottom of League One, the Cobblers went down to Reyes Cleary’s first-half strike, which lifted Barnsley up to 13th.

The visitors made all the early running, with an unmarked Tom Bradshaw heading just wide at a corner and David McGoldrick fizzing off target from distance.

While Barnsley could not capitalise on their strong start, they did eventually take the lead eight minutes before the break when Cleary latched on to Patrick Kelly’s pass, cut inside and picked out the far corner.

Kyle McAdam fired into the side netting in first-half stoppage-time and Dean Campbell curled a shot just wide after the break, but otherwise Northampton struggled to create meaningful chances.

Adam Phillips had the best opportunity of the second half when spooning over from close range, while Tykes goalkeeper Kieren Flavell clawed away Conor McCarthy’s late header to preserve his clean sheet.

Stockport County 1-2 Port Vale

The Hatters still require a point to extend their season after Martin Sherif and Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel scored first-half goals to earn Jon Brady’s side just a 10th win of the campaign.

Everton loanee Sherif shot the visitors into a fourth-minute lead, sliding in to convert Ben Waine’s left-wing cross from six yards.

Vale doubled their lead after 23 minutes when Lawrence-Gabriel seized on Malik Mothersille’s hesitancy to curl in a left-foot effort.

Jack Diamond twice went close to reducing the arrears, while team-mate Che Gardner escaped with only a yellow card for ending Waine’s run on goal.

Skipper Ben Garrity nearly made it 3-0 only to be denied by Corey Addai’s fingertips.

Stockport boss Dave Challinor made three half-time changes including an appearance of last Saturday’s hat-trick hero, Louie Barry.

But fourth-placed County, who can still be caught by seventh-placed Luton, managed only one goal six minutes from time through Odin Bailey.
