League One & League Two round-up: Lincoln City take huge promotion step as Cardiff falter

A near full complement of League One and League Two fixtures took place on Tuesday night, with plenty of action at the top end of the third tier as the promotion race heated up.

A near full complement of League One and League Two fixtures took place on Tuesday night, with plenty of action at the top end of the third tier as the promotion race heated up.

Goal fests at Peterborough and Luton Town saw Rotherham United and Exeter City drop further into relegation trouble, with the Millers now six points from safety.

In League Two, the fight against relegation opened up with Harrogate Town completing a fabulous away victory at Tranmere, dropping Barrow to the foot of the table.

Elsewhere, league leaders Bromley took home all three points with a smash-and-grab win at struggling Newport County.

Huddersfield Town 2-2 Lincoln City

Town took a 15th-minute lead through birthday boy Hardie. Antony Evans sliced open the Imps defence, laying a ball through to Hardie who took a couple of strides forward and placed a low shot into the net.

Huddersfield doubled their advantage five minutes later when a Sean Roughan long throw found its way through to an unmarked Ryan Ledson near the penalty spot and he crashed a shot past George Wickens.

City reduced the deficit after 28 minutes when a Hamer long throw was headed into his own net by Josh Feeney.

Sonny Bradley’s 64th-minute header from substitute Tom Bayliss’ corner produced a low save from Lee Nicholls in the first real effort of the second half.

Lincoln should have had a penalty four minutes later when defender Feeney stopped Rob Street’s shot with his hand – confirmed by TV replays – but referee Ben Speedie awarded a corner, much to the disdain of the visiting players.

But the Imps had the last laugh when sub Towler was alert to Hamer’s long throw and he pounced to send Lincoln five points clear at the top.

Cardiff City 0-2 Wycombe Wanderers

Goals from substitutes Andre Vidigal in the 79th and then Cauley Woodrow in the 84th earned the Chairboys a victory which took them to within two points of the play-off places.

It also condemned the Bluebirds to back-to-back home defeats as they fell five points behind leaders Lincoln.

The visitors shut up shop in the first half to contain the title chasers and then pressed hard in the second thanks to their extra man.

Cardiff lost centre-back Gabriel Osho in the 43rd minute after referee Carl Brook showed him a straight red card for a reckless lunge on Ewan Henderson near the centre circle.

The home side had the best chance of the first half after Rubin Colwill had conjured up some magic in the box and crossed to Omari Kellyman four yards out, but he somehow managed to miss the target.

Wycombe hit them on the break thereafter and Vidigal raced onto a through ball from Aaron Morley to score the opener before Woodrow headed home after a free-kick to seal the points.

Luton Town 3-2 Exeter City

The Hatters led after 13 minutes when Liam Walsh’s corner was headed in by Kasey Palmer for his third goal in three games.

Emilio Lawrence shot straight at Joe Whitworth from 20 yards before the game came to life as Exeter levelled in the 25th minute, with Reece Cole slamming home.

Town were back in front four minutes later after Jack Aitchinson handballed in the area for Jordan Clark to roll home the penalty.

City should have levelled, but Jack McMillan was denied by Josh Keeley and he put the rebound against a post.

Whitworth denied Palmer his second but was beaten in first-half stoppage time as George Saville’s free-kick was turned home by Hakeem Odoffin for his first Luton goal.

Exeter had a goal back four minutes into the second period when Timur Tutierov waltzed into the area and found Ilmari Niskanen to tap in.

Luton should have added a fourth as Devante Cole fired at Whitworth, while Clark hammered against the woodwork, but they held on to make it back-to-back victories.

Tranmere Rovers 0-3 Harrogate Town

A Chanse Headman brace and a Reece Smith strike lifted Simon Weaver’s side off the foot of the table, leaving Rovers without a win in seven and hovering dangerously close to the drop zone.

The visitors took the lead after nine minutes when Smith ran through the heart of the home defence before slotting past Marko Marosi from the edge of the area.

The lead was doubled two minutes later as Town broke quickly from a corner, Jack Evans racing the length of the pitch before teeing up Headman to finish.

The result was all but sealed seven minutes before the break when Headman, left unmarked, prodded home from six yards after good work down the right from Tom Hill.

The hosts offered little after the break, with Omari Patrick twice firing straight at Henry Gray while the visitors continued to threaten.

The final whistle was greeted by a chorus of boos by the home crowd as Harrogate claimed what could be a vital three points.

Accrington Stanley 0-4 Notts County

The Magpies were in charge from the start, Stanley goalkeeper Ollie Wright denying Harald Nilsen Tangen after just three minutes.

County opened the scoring on nine minutes when Tangen fed Jodi Jones in the area and Wright was unable to keep out his low shot.

A defensive mix-up gifted County a second on 31 minutes as Conor Grant pounced on the loose ball, sending Keanan Bennetts clear and he fired home.

The Magpies dominated although goalkeeper James Belshaw did have to tip over a Shaun Whalley strike just before half-time.

County continued to press after the re-start, Wright pushing out a Lewis Macari close-range header.

Around the hour mark, Stanley did have two decent chances with Paddy Madden’s strike saved and Whalley’s effort just wide.

However, County were in charge and made it three on 68 minutes with Grant’s strike initially saved by Wright but the midfielder fired home the rebound.

Two substitutes combined on 83 minutes with Alassana Jatta squaring for Tyrese Hall for the fourth.
