Match Preview: Northampton Town v Charlton Athletic (Saturday, 3pm)

Charlton Athletic travel to Northampton Town on Saturday in League One.

The visitors come into the game on the back of a win in their last match, having beaten Derby County 2-1 away, with goals from Alfie May and Karoy Zidane Lovebourne Anderson.

The Cobblers also won their last match, 2-0 against Burton Albion, with their goals scored by Mitchell Pinnock and Marc Leonard.

In May, Charlton have the league’s most on-form striker so far this season. He has notched 17 goals in 32 appearances.

His goal rate of one every 157 minutes is slightly quicker than that of Sam Hoskins, Northampton’s top scorer with a goal every 167 minutes, and a total of 14 goals in 28 games.

In the last 10 years, Northampton and Charlton have played each other on seven occasions. Northampton won two of them, Charlton four, and they drew once.

On average, the Cobblers scored 1.1 goals and the Addicks 2.3 in those matches.

Their last meeting was on January 23, when Northampton won 3-2 away.

With 49 goals in 35 games so far this season, Athletic are scoring more than average in the league with 1.4 goals per game. But they are conceding more than average too, letting in 53 goals at a rate of 1.5 per game.

Town are also above average scorers, with 1.4 goals per game, compared to a league average of 1.3. They have conceded 1.5 goals per game.

The Addicks are 20th in the table after 35 games, of which they have won eight and drawn 13, earning 37 points.

The Cobblers are eight places ahead of the visitors in 12th, with 14 wins and six draws putting them on 48 points.

The home side are in mixed form in League One, with two wins and two draws from their last six games.

With a win and three draws over that period, Charlton’s form is slightly worse – they have taken six points from 18, compared to Northampton’s eight.

Saturday’s match will be refereed by Martin Woods, who has taken charge of eight League One games so far this season, issuing one red card and booking 34 players. He has awarded one penalty.

The last Northampton game Woods refereed was a 1-0 home win against Peterborough United on August 19. He is yet to oversee a match featuring Charlton this season.
