Tom Cleverley felt a nervous home crowd played a part in helping his Watford side end a run of five Championship games without a win with a hard-fought victory over Middlesbrough.
The defeat piles the pressure on Boro boss Michael Carrick as his side remains without a victory this month.
Moussa Sissoko headed what proved to be the winner five minutes before half-time to secure what was just a second win since Boxing Day.
The Hornets leapfrogged Boro, who have now lost their past four league games, into the top 10.
