Cardiff City boss Omer Riza was disappointed to leave the Stadium of Light empty-handed after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Sunderland.
His side recovered from a nightmare start as Eliezer Mayenda put the hosts in front with an early opener.
Isaak Davies drew his side level four minutes before the break against the run of play.
Striker Yousef Salech had a glorious chance to put the Bluebirds in front in the second half but was denied by goalkeeper Anthony Patterson before Chris Mepham netted the winner for the Black Cats.
