Wayne Rooney said it was “the toughest week of my managerial career” after watching his Plymouth side capitulate for the second time in four days.
Scott Twine broke the deadlock before a brace from Anis Mehmeti and a late goal from substitute Sinclair Armstrong piled on the misery for the Pilgrims.
Rooney was taunted with chants of “sacked in the morning” by City fans and the large contingent of travelling supporters made clear their anger at the final whistle.
