Tottenham FC’s strong start to the 2023/24 season finished disappointingly, as the Lilywhites finished with 66 points and outside a Champions League spot. Head Coach Ange Postecoulou will be tasked to utilize the currently opened transfer window to create a winning team capable of competing for silverware in the Domestic League, and the Europa League. The schedule for all 38 of Tottenham’s league matches for the upcoming season and the remaining 342 fixtures throughout the year will be revealed at 9 am (UK time) on June 18th.
Last summer, Tottenham Hotspur found themselves in a challenging situation. They had to manage the transfer window without a director of football because Fabio Paratici was banned by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for alleged false accounting and market manipulation during his time at Juventus. Although the suspension was reduced on appeal, Paratici resigned from his role at Spurs in April. Scott Munn had been appointed as the newly-created chief football officer (CFO), but his start date was delayed for two months until September. Additionally, Spur’s Performance director Gretar Steinsson left his position at the end of June. In Ange Postecoglou’s initial weeks as head coach, he had a more significant role in recruitment alongside chairman Daniel Levy, while Paratici provided background support on a consultancy basis.
Things are different now, and more stability has arrived in the club’s hierarchy and the current transfer window is prioritized to upgrade the club’s performances next season. After the expiration of several contracts and potential departures this summer, Ange Postecoglou has mapped out several positions of interest. These would include the center forward position that has been left bare since the departure of the club’s highest goal scorer Harry Kane. Richarlison and Last summer’s signings have been recycled in position to find a perfect flow, but the quality of their game seems to have reduced without a permanent finisher. Maddison still occupies the No. 10 position, while captain Son Heung-min is anticipated to return to the left wing once a new No. 9 is signed. Tottenham and Arsenal’s interest in RB Leipzig’s striker Benjamin Sesko faces a setback as the Slovenian recently extended his contract with the German club.
Spurs are showing strong interest in English forward Eberechi Eze who currently features for England at Euro 2024. The attacker who suffered from injury setbacks at the beginning of the season and came back strong to bang in goals and assists for the Eagles is valued at £ 60 million by Crystal Palace. He is also a target for city rivals – Manchester United and Manchester City. When asked if Levy and Postecoglou will feel that the attacker is worth that sort of fee this summer, formal Tottenham defender Alan Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News:
“Yeah, I think so for someone who is so talented and at a good age. Normally when you get a little bit older, you get a little more restricted. You need to play in a certain type of formation, you need to be this sort of player and he just doesn’t look like that sort of guy. He just goes out and plays with a smile on his face, he plays with a lot of freedom and he’s got so much attacking quality. He can score goals, he can assist, these are the type of guys you need and he’s been rewarded for his good form by being picked for the England squad. I think he could go and be a shining star so £60million is right. You look at some of the prices that are getting banded around now for players that aren’t as good so I can understand that.”
Tottenham is yet to surpass the £60m mark for a single player but Daniel Levy has demonstrated a willingness to invest heavily in the right player, as shown by the acquisitions of Tanguy Ndombele, Richarlison, Brennan Johnson, Cristian Romero, and James Maddison, each costing over £40m. A significant investment will be crucial to return and maintain the club’s place as a top contender. Signing Eze could be a step in the right direction, though it remains uncertain where Postecoglou intends to play him.
Tanguy Ndombele Added To The List Of On-Contract Departures At Spurs On Mutual Agreement
Tottenham have announced that Tanguy Ndombele will leave the club on June 30 after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract. Ndombele joined Spurs from Lyon in 2019 as their club-record signing in a deal that could have reached £63 million. Despite being a seven-cap France international, he has not met expectations at the club and is now expected to leave after making just 91 appearances for Tottenham.
Ndombele signed a six-year contract upon arriving in north London, but he has spent the last three seasons on loan away from the club. His debut campaign at Spurs was challenging, with 29 appearances fought with form and fitness issues under Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho. He picked form under Mourinho, delivering impressive performances when football resumed after the coronavirus pandemic. He was at his most consistent during the 2020-21 season, contributing 10 goal involvements in 46 appearances for Spurs.
Jose Mourinho’s dismissal initiated a downward spiral for the 27-year-old, who found limited game time under Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte before being loaned to Lyon at the start of 2022. He was then loaned to Napoli, where he had a minor role in their 2023 Serie A victory. Current Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou offered him a fresh start last summer, but Ndombele failed to seize the chance following a pre-season ankle injury. Consequently, Postecoglou approved his departure. Despite contributing to another league title at Galatasaray last month, the Turkish club opted not to make his move permanent. This has left Ndombele facing another summer return to Spurs, but it appears he would continue his career elsewhere as discussions are underway to terminate his lucrative contract a year early.
Alongside Tanguy Ndombele, Japhet Tanganga, Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier, and Ivan Perisic have officially departed from Tottenham after their contracts ended. Dier, who spent most of last season on loan at Bayern Munich, made 365 appearances and scored 13 goals during his nine-and-a-half years with Tottenham. They are available as free transfers.
Postecoglou Gives Green Light On Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso Potential Transfer
Atletico Madrid have rekindled their interest in signing Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. The Spanish club has been monitoring Hojbjerg for some time and is reportedly keen on improving their midfield options with the experienced Danish international, currently on international duties. Hojbjerg, who joined Tottenham from Southampton in 2020, has established himself as a key player in the Spurs midfield. Tottenham may be reluctant to part with Hojbjerg, given his importance to the team and in Postecoglou’s squad. His potential departure would necessitate a search for a suitable replacement, which could be a challenging task in the current transfer market.
Fulham, Juventus, and Napoli are amongst the teams showing continual interest in the midfielder. Fenerbahce has also recently emerged as a potential destination, with the move likely approved by new manager Jose Mourinho, who previously worked with Hojbjerg at Tottenham. A fee of £20 million has been proposed by Spurs with Atletico Madrid now in a strong financial position to finalize the transfer, particularly since they no longer have Memphis Depay and Stefan Savic on their roster.
Real Betis who initially signed Lo Celso from Paris Saint-Germain before selling him to Spurs in 2019 are keen to re-sign him this summer. The Argentine’s future at Tottenham is uncertain as he enters the final year of his contract. Lo Celso isn’t eager to leave but would welcome the idea if it means getting more regular playing time. Last season, he made only four Premier League starts for the North London club. Aston Villa could also emerge as a destination with Villa in the market for an attacking midfielder this summer. Manager Unai Emery previously took Lo Celso on loan to Villarreal and remains a long-term admirer of the player.
In other news, Spurs are set to appoint Jack Chapman from Southampton as their new head of academy recruitment. Chapman, who joined Southampton last summer from Swansea as head of youth recruitment, is expected to begin his role at Tottenham later this summer. He will depart Southampton on good terms, with officials at the newly promoted Premier League club acknowledging his contributions to rebuilding their recruitment and pre-academy programs.
