Southampton Is The Second Most Likely Relegated Team To Return To The Premier League

The 2023/24 Championship season begins on August 4th, and it appears to be another competitive edition with lots of contenders for promotion to the Premier League.

Leicester, Leeds, and Southampton have all returned to the second tier after being relegated and are the favorites to return at first. Ipswich Town, Plymouth Argyle, and Sheffield Wednesday all made it out of an extremely competitive League One last season and may even be seeking back-to-back promotions.

Leicester Dominates The Market

Leicester was the most expensive of the three teams to be relegated from the Premier League. However, the 2020/21 FA Cup winners were relegated following Everton’s victory on the season’s final day.

The Foxes won the Premier League in the biggest upset in the competition’s history in the 2015/16 s. Still, just seven years later, they returned to the Championship, where they were installed as 11/8 favorites to return to the top division. Despite the fact that James Maddison has transferred to Tottenham, Youri Tielemans has moved to Aston Villa, and Harvey Barnes has moved to Newcastle.

Manchester City assistant Enzo Maresca takes over as Foxes manager from Dean Smith in only his second senior managerial role, following a stint at Parma in 2021. Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks has joined the club.

Teams That Have Been Relegated Are Leading The Way

Leeds and Southampton have joined Leicester at the top of the promotion race.

The Whites are 9/4 to get promoted in the 2023/24 season, while the Saints, who have former Swansea manager Russell Martin in charge at St Mary’s, are also 9/4. These teams’ parachute payments are likely to offer them a financial advantage over their Championship opponents. Leeds has benefited from a takeover by a group of inve, including lutes PGA Tour golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. However, all three relegated sides are going to go through a significant transition, with their squads likely to be considerably different from their time in the top division.

They may also be troubled by the fact that last season, Burnley was the only team to return to the Premier League at the first attempt, with Watford and Norwich failing even to make the playoffs.

The Losers Of The Playoffs Are Not Among The Best

Only one of the first eight teams in the promotion betting for the 2023/24 Championship season, Middlesbrough, reached the playoffs last season. Michael Carrick’s side are 3/1 to get promoted, the shortest price of any team aside from the demoted trio, and their form under the ex-Manchester United star, who has won 18 of his 33 games in command, will be a bonus. Boro’s opponents in the playoff final, Coventry, are 6/1 to win the league next season, although the Sky Blues have lost Viktor Gyokeres to Sporting Lisbon.

Sunderland also missed out on promotion through the playoffs well, but they are 13/2 to go up this season, with Ipswich, Stoke, Norwich, Watford, and West Brom ahead of them in the betting market.
