Most decorated English clubs that are now in the lower leagues

Football is a sport that is widely revered all around the world, although the passion for the game may not be as matched anywhere else than in England.

The sport – which became what it is today in England – is a sport that much of the country’s population continue to follow with pride, as many watch their favourite team walk out onto the pitch in the hope of obtaining a win with each game played.

For many, there is nothing quite like going to a game on a Saturday afternoon or in the middle of the week, and participating in everything that it brings. Whether that be going down the local and enjoying a drink with friends and fellow supporters, having a bite to eat, or even enhancing the matchday experience by getting involved in sports betting using bet365 bonus codes that are available, fans will do whatever they can to enjoy the occasion as much as they can.

Football can provide fans with a vast array of emotions, and some have perhaps felt more pain and heartbreak than they would like or care to admit. Especially those fans who support clubs that they may have once witnessed at the top of the game and are now struggling throughout the Football League.

Let’s look at some of the most decorated English clubs that now struggle to reach the height they once experienced.

Blackburn Rovers

A winner of the Premier League back in the 1994-95 season under Kenny Dalglish as manager and a front line that was led by Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton who scored more than 60 goals between them, Blackburn Rovers have never been able to enjoy that success since.

The Ewood Park outfit were relegated to the Championship and even League One back in 2017, but have since returned to England’s second tier. Given how well things are going under Jon Dahl Tomasson, the club could return to the Premier League in 2023, as they sit in the playoffs. They are 12th in the all-time list of most successful football clubs with a total of 12 trophies.

Sunderland

Another of the biggest teams in English football to have had a tumultuous time in recent history is Sunderland, with the Black Cats having enjoyed some success throughout their history. Nonetheless, the Mackems are another team to have experienced the same journey that Blackburn went on.

Sunderland have experienced a freefall in fortunes over the years as they have gone from the Premier League to League One. They are also in the Championship as of the 2022/23 season, and appear on course for a mid-table finish. The Black Cats have managed to win 10 trophies across a variety of different competitions in their history, placing them 13th in the list of the all-time most successful football clubs in English football.

Sheffield Wednesday

Fans of more recent generations will perhaps not remember Sheffield Wednesday being a Premier League club, let alone being rather successful throughout English football. They have managed to win a total of nine trophies in their history, ranking them joint-14th on the list alongside the likes of Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion.

The Owls have floundered just as much as those mentioned already, with the club having been hit with points deductions and everything else as they sank to the depths of League One. This season could be the year they finally escape the third tier, though, as they sit among the leaders with just a handful of matches still left to be played.
