Mick McCarthy axed by Apoel Nicosia after just two months

The former Ipswich Town and Sunderland boss has been sacked after he oversaw a downturn in form for the Cyprus club

‘s brief stint in Cyprus has come to an abrupt end, after a run of four defeats in four saw the former Republic of Ireland manager relieved of his duties.

The former , and boss has been dismissed swiftly by Apoel Nicosia, after the serial champions of the Cypriot league found themselves in 11th place.

McCarthy’s long time assistant Terry Connor has also been removed from his role at the club.

“The company APOEL (PUBLIC) LTD announces the end of its cooperation with coach Mick McCarthy,” the club said in a statement.

“We wish Mr. McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor good luck.”

McCarthy during his short spell at Nicosia, linked up with familiar faces from the in forwards Joe Garner and Atdhe Nuhiu. Both much like McCarthy, have struggled to make the desired impact at the club, with the pair yet to get off the mark in Cyprus.

McCarthy, prior to his appointment as Apoel boss, had lead the Republic of Ireland through their Euro 2020 qualification campaign, finishing third in the group behind Switzerland and Denmark.

However, he stepped down as manager before he could take charge of his countries playoff against Slovakia – this was due to complications regarding he and already planned successor Stephen Kenny’s contracts as COVID had lead Euro 2020 to be postponed until 2021, with Kenny set to takeover at the conclusion of Ireland’s Euro 2020 campaign.
