IT IS 26 years since Ruud Gullit made the fateful decision to drop club captain and local hero Alan Shearer for a huge Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park.
“That’s not a team-sheet,” remarked one local journalist when the bombshell dropped. “That’s a suicide note.”
How right he was. Newcastle lost 2-1 and sank to the bottom of the Premier League. Gullit returned to his office and - still sodden from that evening’s downpour - wrote his letter of resignation. Three days later, he was gone.
