It’s more than just disappointment. It’s the sort of ‘what might have been’ moment that you know might never come round again. It sticks in your mind, and it’s very hard to shake off.
Just look at Sheffield United, who lost to Sunderland at Wembley in May and began the weekend bottom of the Championship without a point from three games.
A 4-1 defeat at home to Bristol City on the opening day set the tone for what has been a disastrous start to the new season.
