Alfie Mawson entered his consultant’s office clinging to a last vestige of hope. He departed without a shred.
“Brutal,” is how Mawson describes the news that a playing career which took him to the Premier League and England recognition was finished at the age of 29.
Plagued by knee injuries for several years, Mawson failed a medical at Birmingham last summer and subsequently joined Wycombe. The Chairboys expertly managed the situation but the pain worsened to such an extent that Mawson sought advice from a trusted specialist.
