Shrewsbury Town have approached Partick Thistle in the hope they give their permission to open talks with manager Alan Archibald.
It has been two weeks since Micky Mellon left New Meadow to take over at National League side Tranmere Rovers and the Shrews board have turned their attention towards Archibald whose team have struggled to 11th in the Scottish Premier League this season.
Like Thistle, Shrewsbury's season has been a tale of woe with their last three league matches resulting in defeat and sending them to the bottom of League One. Archibald however, is someone who has a record of making an instant impact.
Upon his appointment back in 2013, Archibald steered Partick to promotion in his first full season in charge since turning to management and securing the title in the process. Furthermore, he has achieved the objective of keeping the club in the Scottish Premier League on three occasions – a similar brief to be performed at the Shropshire-based club.
It is understood that chief executive Brian Caldwell held interviews with the four candidates shortlisted yesterday but has made a late dash to Glasgow, after speaking to a number of contacts he has in made in the Scottish game during his eight years as chief executive at St Mirren.
Caldwell hopes to name Mellon's successor before Saturday's match at home to Northampton Town.
