Midfield duo leave Colchester for Championship moves

Relegated Colchester United have agreed to sell star midfielders Alex Gilbey and George Moncur to Wigan Athletic and Barnsley, respectively.

Gilbey, voted United’s Player of the Year for last season, moves to the DW Stadium on a three-year deal after the League One champions agreed an undisclosed fee.

“Alex was one of the outstanding young talents in League One last season and we believe the next stage of his career can be fulfilled here,” Wigan boss Gary Caldwell told the club’s official website.

“He’s exactly the sort of player and person who suits this club and we’re delighted to add him to the group for pre-season,” Caldwell added of the 21-year-old, who made 42 appearances for Colchester last season.

Also looking to establish themselves back in the Championship are Barnsley, who have won the race for West Ham academy graduate George Moncur.

Peterborough had had a bid accepted, but the 22-year-old has opted to join Paul Heckingbottom’s side and is set to be unveiled at a press conference next Monday.

Moncur, 22, caught the attention of several clubs during the first half of the season by scoring 10 goals in 29 appearances from midfield.

The fee for Moncur is believed to be over £500,000, with the Tykes making a number of improved bids after Colchester’s initial unwillingness to sell.

Barnsley remain interested in Walsall’s Tom Bradshaw and Plymouth Argyle central defender Curtis Nelson.
