When the architects contracted to refurbish Newcastle United’s corporate facilities paid a visit to St James’ Park following the Saudi-led takeover in 2021, they were shocked by what they found.

Threadbare upholstery. Missing roof panels. Holes in the carpet.
It looked more like an underfunded primary school than a Premier League football club with Champions League aspirations.
The training ground was even worse.
