Oxford United sack Gary Rowett with U’s in Championship relegation scrap

Oxford United have sacked Gary Rowett with the club entrenched in this season’s Championship relegation battle.

The 51-year-old’s fate was sealed by Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Charlton Athletic – a result that came exactly one year into Rowett’s tenure.

He departs with Oxford winless in four and rooted in the Championship bottom three, as travelling supporters made their frustrations clear at full-time over the quality of football on show.

Rowett had guided the U’s to safety last season in their first Championship campaign for 25 years after taking charge midway through the campaign.

Difficult decision

A club statement read: “Oxford United can confirm the departure of Gary Rowett as men’s first team head coach. Assistant head coach, Mark Sale, has also left the club.

“The process to appoint a new head coach is already underway and the club will provide an update in due course.

“In the interim, Craig Short will lead first team preparations alongside Chris Hackett and Lewis Price.”

Chairman, Grant Ferguson, added: “Gary joined during a challenging period and deserves immense credit for the hard work and leadership that saw us retain our Championship status last season.

“However, following a disappointing run of results, we have had to take this difficult decision in the best interests of the club.

“On behalf of the board, I would like to place on record our thanks to Gary and Mark for their contribution to the football club and to wish them all the best for the future.”

Next up for Oxford is a Boxing Day clash with Southampton.
