Sheffield Wednesday’s nightmare season took another blow today as the English Football League confirmed a further six-point deduction for the club – adding to the 12-point penalty imposed when the Owls entered administration in October.
The latest punishment stems from “multiple breaches of EFL regulations relating to payment obligations”, including failures to pay players and staff on time.
As a result, the Owls now sit on minus 10 points, rock-bottom of the Championship table and 27 points adrift of safety.
In the same announcement, the league disclosed that former owner Dejphon Chansiri has been banned from owning or directing any EFL club for a period of three years.
Alleged breaches
An EFL Spokesperson said: “Following earlier media reports, the EFL can confirm that Sheffield Wednesday FC are to be deducted six points with immediate effect for multiple breaches of EFL Regulations relating to payment obligations, with Mr Dejphon Chansiri prohibited from being an owner or director of any EFL Club for a period of three years.
“While matters remain ongoing in respect of the issues being considered by the independent Club Financial Reporting Unit, for alleged breaches in the 2025/26 season prior to the Club entering administration, the League can confirm that it is not seeking any further points deductions from the Club.
“A full statement will be issued once these matters have been formally concluded.
“Separately, the EFL and Sheffield Wednesday remain in discussions regarding its appeal against the fee restriction, which is currently set to run until the end of the winter 2027 transfer window.
“This is likely to be resolved as part of the Club’s exit from administration. No further comment will be made at this time.”

Bleak outlook
The deduction deepens what was already a bleak outlook for Wednesday’s survival hopes, especially given their paltry record since entering administration.
With limited resources, transfer embargo, and the growing possibility of relegation, the pressure on the next appointed owner – and the administrators – has never been greater.
Wednesday haven’t tasted a league win in their last 12 outings; their lone success coming against Portsmouth back in September.
Now, with the club engulfed in turmoil, Henrik Pedersen takes his side to Blackburn Rovers this weekend, hoping to finally draw a line under their dismal run.
