Darren Ferguson rues Peterborough’s profligacy after Exeter’s late equaliser

Darren Ferguson Peterborough

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson rued his side for not killing the game off against Exeter after they were pegged back by Millenic Alli’s stoppage-time equaliser.

Posh had more than one chance to add to Hector Kyprianou’s opening goal and seal their first win in seven Sky Bet League One games against a Grecians side who hardly threatened an equaliser.

But the majority inside the Weston Homes Stadium were left deflated late on when Alli followed up his own saved penalty to prevent the visitors from falling to a fourth straight league defeat.

Disappointed Dressing Room

Ferguson said: “It’s a disappointed dressing room, as you would expect, and a game we should have won more comfortably.

“We probably didn’t have as much possession as we normally do, but we thought that might be the case, the shape was very good off the ball, they didn’t cause us a problem.

“I felt as comfortable as I’ve felt in terms of not conceding.

“Whether Tay [Edun] needs to make the challenge or not, it’s a debatable penalty.

“The linesman gives it, which you don’t often see, but that’s just where we’re at, at the moment, we just can’t catch a break.

“Always at 1-0 you feel you need to get that second goal just to kill the game off and the big one, Gustav [Lindgren] off the line, I don’t know how that’s not gone in.

“I’m disappointed for the players because we just can’t catch a break at the moment.”

Peterborough led after 34 minutes through a flowing move that saw Ryan de Havilland and Malik Mothersille combine to allow captain Kyprianou to finish.

After Edun felled Demitri Mitchell in the area, Alli rescued a point for Exeter in the first minute of stoppage time when he followed up after Nicholas Bilokapic had kept out his penalty.

Gary Caldwell

Exeter boss Gary Caldwell said: “Demi always gives us a spark – he gives us a bit of quality, he’s had a lot of games after coming back from a long-term injury and tonight we felt like to ask him to go again from the start would be difficult.

“But he showed his quality when he came on the pitch and that’s what I ask of everyone; that whenever you’re called upon you are ready to give something for the team.

“A lot of players that started tonight haven’t featured a lot recently because of injuries, suspensions, different things – the squad is pretty bare at the minute.

“People stepped up to the plate and gave us a performance that is a big away point.

“I was looking at my boots myself at one point – I’ve been joining in the boxes [at training], I’m on dry January, so it might be my turn soon, but we’re very stretched.”
