From South Africa to the Premier League: Foster Continues the Legacy of Iconic Footballers

Burnley’s recent promotion to the Premier League means that South African footballer Lyle Foster is on the brink of playing in what is widely considered the world’s most significant league. Foster will follow in the footsteps of numerous other South African players who have previously played in the Premier League.

To secure his spot in Burnley’s Premier League squad for the upcoming season, Bafana striker Lyle Foster will likely put in extra effort under the guidance of manager Vincent Kompany. Bartlett spent six years at Charlton at the turn of the century before returning to South Africa to join Kaizer Chiefs in 2006. 

Mark Fish – Bolton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic

The former Orlando Pirates defender joined Bolton in 1997 before playing alongside Bartlett at Charlton for four seasons. 

Pierre Issa – Chelsea and Watford

The Germiston-born defender was once loaned to Chelsea from Marseille but is best remembered for his time at Watford during the 2001/02 season. 

Aaron Mokoena – Portsmouth and Blackburn Rovers

Former Bafana captain Lucas Radebe, nicknamed Mbazo, played for Blackburn from 2005 to 2009 and later turned out for Portsmouth, where he spent three seasons until July 2012.

Steven Pienaar – Everton, Tottenham, and Sunderland

Pienaar holds the distinction of being the only South African footballer to have played for three different Premier League clubs. He had a decade-long stint in the Premier League from 2007 to 2017, following in the footsteps of Radebe who spent 11 years at Leeds. 

Benni McCarthy – Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United

McCarthy joined Blackburn in 2006 after leaving FC Porto, where he played alongside Mokoena. He struggled to find success and eventually returned to South Africa to play for Pirates after a brief stint at West Ham. McCarthy now works as at Manchester United as a striker coach, and has been hailed as the force behind Marcus Rashford’s recent success in front of goal. Mbulelo Mabizela – Newcastle United

The former Newcastle United and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder, who came through the ranks of the Magpies’ development program, played 10 games for the Premier League side.

While Khumalo played alongside Pienaar at Tottenham Hotspur, he did not feature in a single Premier League match during his time there and instead went on several loan spells from 2010 to 2015. 

Kagisho Dikgacoi – Fulham and Crystal Palace

In contrast, Kagisho Dikgacoi, who is known for his reserved personality, experienced Premier League football during his stint with Fulham and Crystal Palace from 2009 to 2014.
