Blues & Owls turn up heat

Plymouth’s lead at summit trimmed

Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday earned valuable victories to take advantage of leaders Plymouth’s late slip-up at Burton.

Freddie Ladapo and Marcus Harness were on target as Ipswich eased to a 2-0 win at Exeter, while Mark Mc-Guinness notched the only goal as Wednesday edged out Shrewsbury at Hillsborough.

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna said: “It was a good, solid away performance where we controlled the game with and without the ball. There were lots of positives to take.”

Pacesetters Plymouth also looked on course for maximum points when they led 2-1 at Burton, but Adrian Mariappa scored deep in injury time to earn the Brewers a share of the spoils.

It means Argyle’s lead at the top has been cut to two points from second-placed Ipswich, while the Owls are a further point back in third.

Wednesday are nine points clear of fourth-placed Peterborough, who lost 1-0 at Bristol Rovers.

League Two leaders Leyton Orient extended their advantage at the summit to five points after a come-from-behind 2-1 victory at Stockport.
