DEFENDERS IN NEED OF RECOGNITION

YET again, the EFL Player of the Year shortlists are dominated by strikers. As a former centre-back, it does annoy me.
Of the nine players nominated from the three divisions, only three don’t play up front. Even they are either wingers or attacking midfielders - Aiden McGeady at Sunderland, plus Danny Mayor and Jay O’Shea of Bury.
It’s almost as bad as a couple of years ago when literally all nine players were strikers. In fact, the last defender to win a Player of the Year award in any division was Craig Dawson at Rochdale in 2010. How can that be right?
