Blues sunk by late Boro goal
Wayne Rooney's return to English football fell flat as Middlesbrough's Morgan Rogers netted a late winner against his Birmingham City side.
On a day overshadowed by the death of Manchester United and England legend Bobby Charlton, it looked as though Rooney would begin his Blues reign with a point at the Riverside. However, Rogers popped up with an 89th-minute winner.
“We might have to go through days like this and it is important we stay calm to ensure we hit the goals we really want to,” said Rooney. “You never enjoy when you lose, but it is great to be back in English football, great to be at Birmingham.”
New Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl also suffered late frustration as his side went down 1-0 at Watford.
