Stockport County are the bookies’ favourites for the League Two title, which is remarkable for a side that spent last season in Non-League.
Remarkable, but justified. When Scunthorpe were relegated from League Two last season, their annual wage bill hovered around the £1m mark. Averaged over a squad of 22 players, that amounts to £874-a-week.
Paddy Madden, the striker Stockport snatched from League One side Fleetwood in March 2021, is currently paid £3,500-a-week.
Yes, Scunthorpe are an extreme example of the post-Covid retraction afflicting lower league sides.
