Dale Taylor and Owen Dale on target as Wigan beat high-flying Huddersfield

First-half goals from Dale Taylor and Owen Dale handed Wigan a narrow 2-1 victory over League One promotion-hopefuls Huddersfield.

Wigan came flying out of the blocks with Dale having a shot tipped over the crossbar by former Latics stopper Lee Nicholls.

And it was no surprise when the hosts took the lead on the 15-minute mark, when Taylor latched onto Toby Sibbick’s through ball and rounded Nicholls before slotting home.

Nicholls turned a goal-bound effort from Jonny Smith round his right-hand post, before Taylor was only inches away from getting on the end of another Sibbick cross.

Huddersfield threatened for the first time when Ben Wiles lifted the ball over the advancing Sam Tickle, only for Jason Kerr to get back and hack it off the line.

Wigan managed to get the second goal their first-half pressure warranted, three minutes before the break, when Dale fired home at the far post of Smith’s right-wing cross.

The visitors gave themselves a lifeline five minutes after the restart when Dion Charles crossed for Callum Marshall to convert from close range.

Town manager Michael Duff was given a yellow card for dissent in the final quarter, before Tawanda Chirewa sent one final effort flying just past the Wigan post but the hosts held on for maximum points.
