IN MY last column in these pages I opined that, by accepting the offer to begin his managerial career at his boyhood club, Oldham Athletic, Paul Scholes had allowed his judgement to be clouded.
Oldham, as Scholes well knew, have been an absolute basket case for the last 12 months. He sought assurances, before taking the job, that there would be no interference from Abdallah Lemsagam, Oldham’s former agent owner, that first-team affairs were to be solely his domain.
Yet whatever convinced Scholes - beyond blind faith or hubris - that things would be any different for him than they were...
