When I managed Preston in the Championship, everyone expected us to spend the season battling relegation.
When the odds came out in August, we were always one of the favourites to go down. To be fair, our budget suggested that was the case as well!
But what that sort of thing does is foster an ‘up yours’ spirit amongst everyone at the football club.
From the start of the season, there’s a competitive edge to the players and staff to say, ‘Right, let’s stay up, let’s prove people wrong and let’s show everybody how good we are’.
